Understand the struggle. Know where to start.
When a child forgets directions, struggles to begin, or becomes overwhelmed by a change in plans, it can be hard to know what to try next.
The Seeds of Learning® Online Community helps parents and professionals understand the executive function skills involved in learning and behavior. Membership includes the Executive Function Cohort: a guided online learning program with lessons, practical tools, and opportunities to ask Tera Sumpter questions as you apply what you learn.
Learn to look more closely at a child's difficulties, consider where the process may be breaking down, and choose support with a clearer purpose.
Notice when a task becomes difficult and what happens at that point.
Consider which executive function skills may be contributing to the difficulty.
Choose a starting point for support rather than trying strategies without a clear reason.
Watch how the child responds and use that information to guide your next decision.
Explain your observations more clearly to families, colleagues, or others supporting the child.
YOUR LEARNING PATH
Start at the roots.
Build your understanding.
The Sumpter Executive Function Framework (SEFF) explains how skills connect. Explore the three phases below.
Understand the foundations.
Explore perception, attention, working memory, and inhibition: the skills involved in noticing information, holding it in mind, and pausing before responding.
Use practical assessment tools to help identify where to begin.
“Could they hold the direction in mind long enough to use it?”
Look at how a child manages the moment.
Explore cognitive flexibility, initiation, self-monitoring, self-correction, self-modulation, and time sense and pacing.
Connect those skills to starting work, noticing mistakes, and adjusting when something changes.
“Did they notice that their approach wasn’t working?”
Connect the skills behind complex tasks.
Explore planning, organization, anticipation, analysis, prioritization, balancing demands, and decision-making.
Consider the foundations a child draws on when managing a project or competing priorities.
“What skills does this task require before a plan can work?”
FROM LEARNING TO PRACTICE
What will I actually do?
Work through a lesson, connect it to a child you support, and bring your questions back to the Community.
Learn the concepts
Watch the teaching modules and use your cohort journal to organize your thinking. Revisit recordings when you need another look.
Apply what you learn
Look more closely at a difficulty you see at home, in a classroom, or in your practice. Use the framework and tools to consider where support could begin.
Ask and reflect
Bring questions to live Q&A office hours with Tera. Discuss the learning with other members and reflect on what happens as you put it into practice.
Make room for the learning
Plan for approximately three hours per week of learning and application. Completing all three phases takes approximately six months, with additional time for practice and reflection in the Leaf and Flower phases.
Once you've completed Root Skills, you can follow the cohort schedule or move at your own pace while your membership remains active.
